2023 Top 10: Toddler Kitchen Play

Toddlers LOVE to help and play in the kitchen! The following are great ways to get your kiddos involved and learning in the kitchen (both theirs and yours). Recommendations for ages 1.5+.

  1. Play Kitchen

This kitchen is a tried and true classic. The online availability has been hit or miss the past few years, so if you see it available for shipping, it’s a good idea to nab it. There are many hacks available to change out the faucet to one with working water!

2. Practice Knives

These knives are safe for independent use with supervision and allow kiddos to start understanding cutting and working those motor skills. They’re a great tool for helping with snack prep on larger items like strawberries, cucumber, etc.

3. Counter Helper

A counter helper is a wonderful way to allow kiddo to be on your level as you cook. These are made to contain kids to reduce safety concerns, while still allowing them to be present with you. A great way to spend intentional time with your little one.

4. Bowl and Wash Brush

For the days when you have too much to do, setting down a large bowl and wash brush with some water and food items to wash is a game changer. Kiddo feels like they are participating and helping and you have an engaged, playing helper who is not underfoot for a good chunk of time. This is a great seasonal task as well- look for foods like mini pumpkins in fall, mini watermelons in summer, etc.

5. Dishes/Cutlery

A staple in the play kitchen, providing kiddos their own kitchen wares is the best way for them to be familiar with the rituals of the family dinner.

6. Table and Chairs

The toddler sized table and chairs are very versatile, but are a great way to allow kiddo to control their snack consumption- they can practice setting and sitting at the table, and are able to create meals when playing in their own kitchen.

7. Labelmaker

This will require supervision, but the outcomes are great. Kiddos enjoy helping with tasks, and labeling food items is a fantastic way to practice letters and fine motor skills.

8. Broom

You’ll be amazed how quickly your kiddo will understand the concept of cleaning with these tools. A great activity is to designate a tile (or make a square with painters tape) for all the crumbs- your toddler will learn how to control the broom and help with cleanup!

9. Tea Set

There are a variety of ‘speciality’ sets you can purchase for kiddos, but it’s always the cutest to see them learn and take seriously the tradition of an afternoon tea.

10. Popsicles!

Cooking together is the best way for kiddos to learn, and nothing beats this summertime staple. Toddlers can help collect fruit to blend and help pour into reusable popsicle molds. Nothing beats enjoying your own, homemade treat!
