2023 Top 10: Mechanical Play for Toddlers

For the kiddo that loves air conditioners, wheels, or gears, here are some ideas to encourage growth and open play. Each item is linked in the name, so feel free to click on the link to purchase for your kiddo!

1.Gear Puzzle

This puzzle is simple but effective in helping kiddo learn how gears work together. It’s also a great way to practice color recognition.

2. Workbench

A mini workbench is a great way to let kiddo practice gross motor skills! The variety of screws work with the screwdriver and wrench and includes storage underneath.

3. Tape Measure

This tape measure is the perfect size for smaller hands and operates with a crank. Each crank makes a ‘click’ sound when the tape measure is pulled back in, so be aware!

4. Flying Saucer

These flying saucers are the kind that kiddo holds and pulls the string to launch. They can fly far with enough of a pull, so plan your space accordingly!

5. Portable Fan

This fan is such a lifesaver on hot days! Not only is it portable (USB charger), but its flexible legs make it able to attach to almost every surface. It’s safe for little fingers and comes in a variety of colors!

5. Propeller Fan

When our kiddos first encountered this fan, they were captivated. It is battery-operated but has soft blades, which makes it perfect for younger toddlers.

6. Bath Mixer

We love this mixer to use in the bath- it helps get out some energy before bed, and it helps froth up bubbles if they’ve started to dissipate.

7. Toy Mixer

A toy mixer helps kiddo learn more about baking and allows them to get out some energy by mixing their own creations.

8. Helicopter

This helicopter is water friendly and has moveable blades!

9. Oil Drip Toy

These were classic toys for us growing up, but there’s no reason our kiddos can’t enjoy them as well! We specifically recommend a drip toy with a gear inside, but any option will be a great item to watch.

10. Salad Spinner

A salad spinner is a great way to let kiddo get out some energy and still indulge the love of a spin. We practice spinning with nothing inside and let kiddo help clean fruits and veggies after grocery shopping. This could also be added to an outdoor play area as a fun way to clean items!
